Application Process For International Graduate Students

If you are an International Medical Graduate (IMG):

  • International Graduates can apply through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). You can visit their web site at http://www.ecfmg.org or by writing to them at ECFMG ERAS Program P.O. Box 13467, Philadelphia, PA 19104-3467
  • Minimum of 1 year prior “hands on experience” in clinical training is required since the medical training and the practice of medicine in other countries are usually very different than in the United States. This must be done as an externship or in an approved ACGME residency-training program.
  • A letter of recommendation from the faculty member supervising your U.S. clinical experience (research and/or observership are NOT acceptable)
  • Dean’s Letter
  • Three (3) letters of reference from U.S. Orthopaedic Surgery faculty members from an approved ACGME training program
  • Medical School transcripts
  • Score reports from USMLE Steps 1 & 2, NBME Parts I & II, and/or other licensing examinations. You must provide proof of passing USMLE Steps I & II
  • Current copy of your ECFMG certificate
  • A current copy of your VISA or Resident Alien card (both sides – The University of California, Irvine cannot sponsor non-permanent residents for VISAS to remain in the U.S.)
  • Copy of Evaluation Status Letter from the California State Medical Board (it should state that you are eligible to commence postgraduate training in the State of California). All questions regarding the Status Letter should be directed to the CA Medical Board.   • ALL SUBMITTED MATERIALS ARE TO BE TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH (if necessary)

Interview dates for 2008-2009 applicants will be held on February 1st & 2nd, 2008 at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center in Orange County, California. Applications for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is conducted and accepted ONLY through the Electronic Residency Program Application Service (ERAS – http://www.aamc.org/ERAS) NO MATERIALS WILL BE ACCEPTED OUTSIDE OF ERAS. All applicants will be notified if an interview has been granted via ERAS e-mail.

UC Irvine, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program provides a five-year continuous program. We DO NOT offer preliminary positions in which an intern or resident may plan to transition into a Fellowship before completing residency training.

Dr. Neil Jones joins the Department of the UC Irvine Center for Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery.

Dr. Stuart Green has been featured in the June 2008 Orthopedics Today magazine about his book "Dear Doctor Franklin; Emails to a Founding Father about Science, Medicine and Technology".

Dr. Steven Ross is President of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) in 2007-2008.

Dr. Ranjan Gupta selected as the Sterling Bunnell Traveling Fellow by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand for 2008.

Dr. Nitin Bhatia selected for the AOA-Japanese Orthopaedic Association Exchange Traveling Fellowship for 2008.

Dr. Ranjan Gupta chosen by Orange County Medical Association as a "Physicians of Excellence" and listed in the January, 2008 Orange Coast Magazine.

Dr. Martin Tynan is completing an Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship and will be returning to UCIMC April, 2008
