The UC Irvine Program in Geriatrics delights in working with older patients, hearing their stories, and being amazed by their vigor. Sometimes we find these individuals are remarkably challenged by their healthcare and psychosocial needs. Geriatric faculty members are inspired by physicians and allied health providers who wish to pursue Geriatrics as a specialty.
With great satisfaction, they share rich opportunities for combining the art and science of medicine working with these patients.
This faculty also knows that physicians and allied health providers who are not specialized in geriatrics will still encounter older adults in their practices. These persons may be the grandparents bringing children to a pediatrician. They may be the aging parents of an adult being seen for an acute brain injury. It might be a spouse who is now the caregiver for a patient with Alzheimer’s disease. Although peripheral to the focus of “the patient’s visit,” they might present particular medical needs which should be recognized and addressed. The Geriatrics Program enjoys providing insight to physicians and allied health providers in identifying and caring about these persons.
