Dr. Kurtz also serves as the Director of the Vision Research Consortium, a novel structure that supports academic and industry collaboration. He has been recognized as a “Best Doctor” by the Best Doctor in America database.

Dr. Kurtz graduated cum laude from Harvard College and received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. He completed a medical internship at Mount Sinai Medical School and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan, Kellogg Eye Center. He went on to complete a vitreo-retinal fellowship at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. He has been board certified since first becoming eligible in 1996.
Dr. Kurtz’s primary clinical interests and expertise are in the field of vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinal vascular disease, macular disease, complications of cataract surgery, trauma and retinopathy of prematurity. He sees patients at both the UC Irvine Campus and Medical Center locations
Dr. Kurtz’ primary research interest is in surgical technology, particularly applications of ultra-fast lasers, an area in which he holds a number of patents and has published extensively. Additional research interests include ophthalmic bioengineering, imaging and drug delivery, as well as the interaction of vision science with other disciplines.
